Satisfied

For many years, I struggled with this verse, not because it appeared to have a complicated theological meaning, but because I had trouble believing it was true. But I knew that Jesus spoke truth.

I had come to Jesus. I believed in him. Yet I felt hungry spiritually and I often felt a deep thirst in my spirit. How could this verse be true? Was I missing something? Gradually the truth became clear.

Bread is meant to be eaten and will give nourishment only when it is consumed. Water only quenches thirst upon being imbibed. As the nutrients and fluid are digested and absorbed, my body gains the strength and refreshment needed.

Jesus was comparing my spiritual needs to those of my physical body. I need to feed on his words and drink deeply of the spiritual water he offers. As the truths he gives are assimilated into my psyche and spirit, I will be satisfied.

Reading these daily devotionals and allowing the truth of Jesus’ words to penetrate your heart and mind, and nourish your soul is one way to satisfy your spiritual hunger and thirst.

Eat, drink and be satisfied.

Today, God, satisfy my spiritual hunger and thirst with your words and spirit. Amen. — KGT
