John sends some disciples to confirm that Jesus is the Messiah. The answer is clear: Jesus is indeed doing the deeds scripture points to.
Jesus says that John is the greatest prophet. And yet, in the reign of G-d, he is surpassed by “the least.” In the Fourth Gospel, John says that “[Jesus] must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30)
Soon we will be celebrating the coming of G-d in a child, one of “the least” in terms of social status or political power. It’s an invitation to be mindful of the little things around us. For many children, it is without question that Christmas comes every year. Their confidence is unshaken, an example of singleness of heart. What can I learn from them?
At the same time, we know that many children have no experience of Christmas, or their experience is uncertain because their situation is insecure. Through the groups and agencies that minister to them, God gives us “secret angel” opportunities.
Loving G-d, help me to stop and watch the children, to see in them things that reveal your kingdom. Help me to see signs of your love, especially at times that draw my attention to other things. Amen. —
