Paul warns us about entitlement—about expecting that which we do not participate in. He uses the image of expecting bread to eat that we did not work for.
I remember as a boy watching/helping my mother make bread. The best part was seeing the yeast go to work and watching the lump of dough eventually spill over the side of the bowl. It was like witnessing a miracle!
The body of Christ is like a fully leavened loaf of bread, filled with God’s grace and the Holy Spirit. Participating in the body of Christ helps us understand the fullness of God’s kingdom and the important role each one of us plays in it. Welcoming and encouraging God’s people helps expand the realm of joy that we experience from God’s goodness.
Now that is something to sink your teeth into!
Gracious God, fill us with your goodness and help us to enliven the world with your grace. Amen. —
