The first part of this passage gives detailed instructions for the people to follow when they enter the land God has promised them. They are to give tithes to celebrate with the Levites and the foreigners, orphans and widows. They are exhorted to follow these instructions with all their heart and soul. They are to commit fully to looking after those without means of producing this bounty.
We, too, have been given a “land flowing with milk and honey.” We are called to give a portion of our bounty to support those who are less fortunate. We are to have a heart of generosity and share what we have in order to help others. God has been generous to us, and in gratitude, we are to be generous to others.
God, we are blessed to live in a land with many resources. We give thanks for our bounty. Show us how and where we should share this wealth with others. Amen. —
