A huge future

I’m fascinated by the story of Abraham. So many facets of his life and journey are carried down through history to describe God’s nature to us. Here, the writer of Hebrews outlines several aspects of Abraham’s story (the leaving of the home country, living in tents, the descendants when Abraham was too old), teaching us why this faith was given to Abraham as well as to us, that there is a home and future prepared for all of God’s children. “He has prepared a city for them” (verse 16), the final part of this argument in our reading, declares that God loves and cares for God’s people enough that the picture for their future together is huge!
The commentary from my Bible (Concordia Self-Study Bible, New International Version, copyright Concordia Publishing House, 1986) says that Hebrews could be called “the book of better things” since the Greek word for “better” and “superior” happens 15 times throughout this book. The culminating verse in our reading today is one of these statements—an exciting anticipation of what is to come!

Fill up my faith today, O God, to trust you in all that happens today, and to see the amazing future we have together. Amen.
