If only I were a lily….

I woke up at 2:00 a.m., and it seemed like the problem was overwhelming. I wrote something down and eventually went back to sleep. When I woke up at my usual rising time, the problem didn’t even seem like a problem anymore.
Jesus offers his listeners a sermon about worry, using images of nature as the demonstration of God’s caring. If God cares for aspects of God’s natural world—if God cares even for the lily—how much more does God care for God’s people?
We can’t see the bigger picture—but this is where God is truly working: God’s plan far exceeds our vision. Jesus says, “do not worry about your life” (verse 22), and calls us to give it up to God, who IS in control. Can I be a lily (verse 27), confident in God’s care and God’s plan?

Keep me focused on you today, Holy One, knowing that you are working beyond me for a bigger plan. Change my worry into praise, knowing that you are in control. Amen.
