Faithful love

The book of Hosea is about Israel’s unfaithfulness. Like an adulterous, cheating partner or a rebellious child, Israel’s idolatry is destructive. God condemns it. The people obstinately reject the prophet’s calls to repent and return to God, who promises healing, renewal and the assurance of God’s faithfulness. Hosea declares God’s appearing is as sure as the dawn and dependable like the spring rains.
As I’m writing, it’s uncertain how much a La Niña winter will influence precipitation levels through the winter and spring, but I am hopeful. More snow makes better skiing, and the moisture is badly needed for agriculture and even for water supplies to our cities. In late July, we’ll ask, “How are the crops faring? Are watering restrictions making our lawns look sickly brown?”
In this age, when we may even question the reliability of weather patterns, it is good to know that God’s love is steady. The sun still comes up every day and with it, God’s love never fails to greet us.

Faithful God, may your unfailing love for us inspire hearts of devotion and faithful living. Amen.
