As this week of questions continues, my appetite disappears. Jesus eats dinner with his friends. One of them is going to betray him.
I love having friends over for a meal. I love planning the menu, setting the table, serving new recipes where spices and sauces create a warm feeling of welcome. I don’t expect any of my guests to say unkind things or criticize my culinary skills. It hurts!
How much more did it hurt Jesus to know one of his closest friends was about to betray him? How could he continue to show love and kindness under such sad circumstances?
I envision Jesus looking at that empty seat. I feel his heart break as tears seep from his eyes. A beloved has left the meal, a place where all are treated with the same love, the same inclusion, the same grace.
Jesus doesn’t chase after him, nor does he chase after any who choose to leave. But he longs for that one, waits for that one, reaches out for that one. Have we chosen to leave the table? Do we know anyone else who has?
Lord, is it I who betrays you with my selfish ways? Help me see who’s missing and love them back to community. Amen. —
