Costly forgiveness

Forgiveness is not easy, it is costly. Jesus epitomised costly forgiveness—forgiving those who crucified him. He died in order that we may be forgiven and in our response, to practice forgiveness of others. According to Martin Luther: “Hence the doctrine of forgiveness of sins is the most important of all, both for us personally and for our relations with others.”
Yet, forgiveness isn’t easy. Anger, blame, bitterness, resentment, getting even dominate hearts, minds and lives—sometimes even causing mental, physical and spiritual illness. For some, it takes years to let go, heal and forgive. Others tragically die, refusing either to be forgiven or to forgive. A lack of forgiveness can destroy marriages and families, cause church conflicts and divisions, an increase in violent crimes, antisemitism, racism, a host of other isms, and wars.
Forgiveness isn’t easy, yet with Christ’s help it is possible! As you pray and meditate on the words of verse 34 today, I invite you to consider the following questions: How has Jesus’ forgiveness changed and/or made a difference in your life? Is there a family member, church member, friend, someone at school or work, or even an enemy who is in need of your forgiveness?

Thank you, Jesus, for your forgiveness. Help us to forgive one another, even enemies. Amen.
