Our text begins with the death of a fine man. Death, so final, so sad and tragic from our point of view. My heart went out to a lady with whom we had lunch recently. Shad had two sons, but both died of cancer. Then she lost her husband, also from cancer. Now she was all alone. Death can be so devastating.
But in our text, there is also a life-giving miracle. The widow fears the loss of her two sons into slavery, but through the prophet Elisha, she is enabled to fill dozens of her jars and her neighbour’s containers with oil which she could sell to pay off her debts.
No, we do not witness miracles such as this one. But truth be told, we are surrounded with miracles. I went to Google to search out the miracle of food plants’ growth. I came to the conclusion that the germination and growth of tomatoes, potatoes, corn, or you name it, is a miracle that God provided for our nourishment. So, let’s all give God thanks and praise for the miraculous way God feeds us.
We do indeed glorify your name for your wonderful care for us. Amen. —
