Criticism

On this day, March 31, in1949, Newfoundland joined Canada. This brings to mind the figure of the dynamic Joey Smallwood who pushed and advocated to join our confederation. He believed joining Canada would bring prosperity to Newfoundland and improve every Newfoundlander’s quality of life. Joining Canada would bring baby allowances, pensions, a better standard of living. Smallwood was criticized by influential businessmen who advocated a union with the United States. History has proven Joey to be right.
Politicians are widely criticized by the public and media. But running down people also happens in workplaces, on social media, in homes, even in the church. Paul’s word to the Romans shows God’s disapproval. “…for in passing judgement on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, are doing the very same things.” (verse 1)
Often, we are critical of others because of our own low self-esteem or our sense of superiority. Joey Smallwood wasn’t perfect, but he had integrity. Before we negatively judge others, let’s remember Jesus’ words to the crowd about to stone a woman caught in adultery, “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8:7)
Criticism is easy, integrity and discretion are not.

Help us give words that build up, not tear down, to be forgiving. Amen.
