Volunteers

It was the day of the main fundraiser for the North Battleford City Kinsmen Band when Heidi received a panicked call from the band director that the supper’s coordinator had backed out, saying they just couldn’t do it. He continued, “You have to come, take over, or we have to cancel, and we can’t afford to do that!” Heidi sped over to the band hall and discovered nothing had been done. With four hours to service time, Heidi said a quick prayer, tapped into her German cooking background, popped the meat in the oven, marshalled fellow band moms and kids to peel potatoes and carrots, set the tables, arranged the buffet, sliced the pies. A parent volunteered to carve the beef. By five p.m., the doors were opened, dinner was served.
Hebrews 10 reports that the early church had backed out of the obligation to atone for their sins, that their sacrifices didn’t make the grade for eternal life. God didn’t cancel the world because of them, instead he summoned a volunteer, God’s glorious son Jesus who did the job, sanctifying them “through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” (verse 10) Jesus never abandons.

Jesus, thanks for marching in, filling our gaps to serve us eternal life. Amen.
