The day before my first driver’s test, I drove into the side of the garage doorway, scraping a long streak of paint from our car. Even so, the car entered through the doorway. Rust eventually developed where the paint was scraped.
That accident makes me wonder about the barriers Jesus speaks of for those who “will try to enter and will not be able.” (verse 24). What might stop one from entering into the kingdom of God? The doorway is narrow, we are told, but it is most certainly open. Things of the world—money, position and false power, pride—are baggage and burdens that fill a narrow doorway. It takes a dedicated intention to just let go of things the world deems important, things which also rust.
The ways of the world are like a pyramid, with the top positions being most coveted. Jesus always sat with those on the bottom—every time. He made it into a circle, no beginning, no end, all faces visible and loved equally.
God of all graciousness, you love each of us dearly. Help us have willing hearts to follow you in faith and to use the gifts you give us in generous ways so all may have a life of dignity. Protect us from selfishness. Draw us to your kingdom. Amen. —
