“That old fox Herod” (verse 32) seems like humorous name calling, unexpected behaviour from Jesus. But on the other hand, Jesus is known for telling it like it is. So, what kind of house would be left to those who have failed to protect the vulnerable? Jesus desires to gather those who are vulnerable like a hen gathers chicks. That would leave the “old fox” with an empty henhouse.
My high school friends lived on a farm, and whenever they needed to clean the chicken coop, we all made ourselves scarce. No one wanted to be around to shovel out months’ worth of dirty straw and poop. Often, an overlooked egg would be found. They stunk so badly! The image is enough to help us understand that without love and compassion, a house is rotten.
Yet Jesus does not cast Herod—or us—away. Jesus still promises that he will see Herod in paradise saying, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” (verse 35) Jesus promises a change of heart.
Loving Jesus, your grace is overwhelming. Without you we are lost and stench-filled. Fill us with hope. Change our heart. Amen. —
