How do we recognize the work of God, the teachings of Christ, the promptings of the Holy Spirit in our hearts? In our lives? How do we respond to the ways God calls us to a life lived in God’s service?
The working of the Holy Spirit is often seen in hindsight as we move into the decisions and choices that may feel like they were entered into, not with divine guidance, but with the wrestling we feel is God’s participation in the decision-making.
When I felt called to ministry, it wasn’t the first time. Looking back, I see the train wreck of my life caused when I declared “no” to God’s urging. But the call came again, and then the wrestling started. It’s only when I look back, when I examine my heart, that I see God’s involvement in my life.
If we are open to God, we see God’s fingerprints everywhere, and we can say, “I see you!” every time we notice how God has acted in our lives.
Holy God, help me to see you at work in my life so that I may relish these moments and rejoice in the work we do together. Amen. —
