In the first half of the book of Isaiah, Isaiah writes of God’s punishment for the Israelites because they turned away from God, which caused their Babylonian exile. The second half talks about Israel’s return from exile, God’s forgiveness, prophesying the future success of Israel. Looking at today’s reading, we see God’s continued love for the Israelite people in verse 2, “The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory,” and, “You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD,” (verse 3) pointing to Israel’s great blessing. The modern reality can be seen in Israel’s advanced market economy, led by the high-tech equipment and pharmaceutical sectors, resulting in a high life expectancy of the people, advanced education levels, and an excellent per capita income.
God’s blessing of the Jewish people has benefited the whole world. Israel is on the forefront of innovation, a centre for scientific research and technological advancements. Here are accomplishments or vindications by Jewish people we see today: the USB flash drive, the Salk polio vaccine, pacemakers, defibrillators and Google, just to name a few.
God takes our situations, forgives us and helps us shine in the world around us.
Forgive us when we have turned from you. Amen. —
