Self-sufficient?

We are encouraged to be self-sufficient. Whatever happens in our lives, we should be able to handle it. Or so we are told. In our group, we recounted how we have managed through ice storms, massive windstorms, and other forces of nature. While each of us has obviously survived during such times of trial, one might wonder how to get through it. A backup generator is of little consolation if your roof is in danger of blowing off.
Today’s psalm expresses some of the immense power found in God’s creation. And while it can feel at times overpowering and overwhelming, is it not also a reminder of God’s incredible power? Rather than making us feel helpless, perhaps we should be reminded that this is a psalm of praise, acknowledging that there is a power higher than us, greater than we are.
While that power may seem terrifying, we are also reminded today that God’s power is with us and for us. Our sense of self sufficiency is pitiful in comparison to the power of God as demonstrated in creation. Would it not be better to drop all pretense of self-sufficiency in favour of aligning ourselves with the all-powerful One?

Powerful Lord, help me to let go of trusting in my own devices and gain a greater trust in you. Amen.
