A child in the Temple. A disciple in the making

Did you notice that verse 52 has a similar ending as found in the story of Samuel, who also grew in wisdom and years, and in divine and human favour? Both were about the same age when they stepped into the theological debates of their time. Both took on ministry for God in the community in their younger years. Both had courage to live out their faith.
One of my favourite groups to teach and interact with is teenagers. What I love about that age group is that they ask questions, demand accountability, seek guidance, challenge the injustices of the world. It’s the developmental stage of finding themselves, identifying who they are and who they want to be. They are looking to find their people, the ones who affirm, challenge and honour them as humans. They don’t sit back and wait for faith to come to them, they are seekers.
It takes patience and wisdom to let them find their way, OR to wait for their invitation to walk with them. And yet, God provides that time.

God, your children seek your wisdom in Christ. Help us to listen to younger voices who hear God calling and practice their faith in ways we do not understand. Amen.
