Receiving forgiveness

Forgiveness is such a beautiful thing to receive, especially when the things we have done or failed to do have deeply wounded others. Especially when we see the results of our wrongdoing, and the layers of heartache that have come with it.
But sometimes, we find a mountain in the way of receiving forgiveness, when those we hurt are not yet ready to give it, or when we are just not able to allow ourselves to be forgiven. We can, at times, hold onto the worst of our wrongdoing, and refuse to receive forgiveness, despite it freely being offered again and again. We can punish ourselves because we don’t think we deserve forgiveness, are worthy of forgiveness, or even need forgiveness.
But that’s not the gospel now, is it? For the gospel brings us freedom to live.
Forgiveness unravels the tight knots within us. Forgiveness loosens the binds that keep us from freely living in relationship, in community. Forgiveness reminds us that we are all vulnerable and in need of grace.
As we turn to God seeking forgiveness for our sins, we already find our God turned toward us, helping us to receive restoration and be freed by the weight that ties us down.

Forgiving God, help us to be set free by the power of your word. Amen.
