I don’t like wind. When I lie in bed listening to the wind, I think of shingles being ripped off, patio furniture strewn across the neighbourhood, trees uprooted. It doesn’t make for a pleasant sleep.
It’s not uncommon to hear someone say, “I can’t wait until the Lord comes.” I often wonder if those folks have read the texts about the Day of the Lord. They can be downright frightening. Take today’s text and the verses preceding it. The heavens will be shaken, the seas roaring, famines, droughts, wars, personal betrayals, will be commonplace, and on it goes. I am not looking forward to those things.
But what comes after is what we await with eager expectation: our redemption drawing nigh. What a day that will be, to see the Lord of lords, newly crowned, coming to gather God’s people together in the safety and blessedness of the new Jerusalem.
So, we watch for the signs, all the while praying that we will faithfully serve our Lord daily, and that we will have the strength to persevere as these signs begin to take place.
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Come.
Lord Jesus, make me observant and faithful as I await your coming. Amen. —
