I am a member of a wood carving group comprised of seniors, most of whom have a lot of experience. It is enlightening to sit among them, watch them work, and ask them questions. While I hack away, taking off too much wood here or not enough there, they pick up their knives and flick, flick, flick, done.
One of the things that we disciples of Jesus need to do is learn from the Master. We aren’t privileged enough to walk the dusty hills of Palestine with him, but we have other resources at our disposal, one of the most important being the Bible. As we read through the stories of Scripture, we learn who our God is, how God responds, what God expects of us, how we are to live with others, and much more. Under the guidance of God’s Holy Spirit, these Bible reading times strengthen our faith, challenge us when we wander, and comfort us when we are down.
The prayer in the verse above is one that we need to make each day, individually and as a church. We need to open our Bibles and sit at the feet of our Lord, thereby learning how to better live and serve as a disciple of Jesus Christ.
Teach me, O Lord, that I might better follow you. Amen. —
