It is almost a universal desire that there be justice in the world. I say almost, because there are those who benefit greatly from injustice and will do anything to prevent the execution of justice. When I watch the news, read news feeds, talk with others, it is easy to be overwhelmed by all the injustice and unrighteousness in the world. Even more shocking is, we find this in our own backyard.
As God’s people, we especially have been called to work for justice and righteousness. Whether we do this by collecting and distributing food to the hungry, standing up for those whose voices have been silenced, working to ensure that each person is recognized as a bearer of the image of God and is to be afforded the dignity deserved by God’s creation, it often feels that we fall woefully short. Besides, despite our best efforts and intentions, we sometimes get it wrong; we have, after all, our own biases which can lead us astray.
This is why Jeremiah’s prophecy is so comforting. God will—and did—raise up a Branch who will execute perfect justice and righteousness. This Branch we know as Jesus. The only way we can even hope to bring about justice and righteousness in this world is to humbly follow where he leads.
Take my hand, righteous Branch, and lead me. Amen. —
