Bewildering times

In this text we read about some of Jesus’ followers and some Pharisees questioning whether or not this Jesus is the Messiah among them. The faithful followers believe Jesus is the Messiah because they know where he came from; besides, how can anyone else do more than what they have seen. But they were especially bewildered when Jesus said, “You know me, and you know where I am from. I have not come on my own.”
Even among the doubters, no one sought to arrest him or hurt him. The bewildered needed not to react but to wait patiently. If we read just beyond this section, we hear Jesus’ proclamation to them to come. (verse 37)
We still face bewildering times, what with the lack of peace in the world, extreme views being expressed, and the widening gap between the rich and the poor. Let us be encouraged that God’s people need not feel helpless and hopeless but be patient. Even as we wait, we can seek justice and peace for all with our words, attitudes and actions.

Lord, help us to be diligent in patience and prayer with actions supporting peace and justice. Amen.
