Get out of the fog

I particularly like Psalm 19 and use verse 14, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer,” as a beginning to my sermons. It gets me and the people ready to hear God’s words. David talks about the law, which I would say is God’s word, as being “perfect, reviving the soul.” But sometimes, we listen to God’s word and it comes across as being foggy, we just cannot understand it. It’s like flying in a plane through the fog; we cannot see where we are going. We get nervous, but then, all of a sudden, we land safely. Thanks to God’s Holy Spirit, that is how it is with God’s word—we finally get it.
When we do get it, David points out that those words are “sweeter also than honey, and drippings of the honeycomb.” (verse 10) What a wonderful way to describe how the word of God affects us.

We give you thanks, O God, for giving us your words for us to hear and follow. Thank you for clearing the fog of our minds and hearts. Amen.
