Jesus the North Star

Girl Guides and Boy Scouts learn of the importance of the North Star, found at the end of the handle of the small dipper constellation. Ancient mariners used the North Star to navigate, knowing its fixed point at due north could be trusted, helping them know where they were and in what direction they were headed.

Paul’s description of Jesus is meant to give people a fixed point by which to navigate life. Jesus is described as the head of the church, the one through whom God reconciles the world. Paul cautions them to not be distracted by fake news and teachings. Follow the North Star who guides your way.

As Christians, when we hear news about immigrants and refugees that is racist or xenophobic, our decisions about how we will respond are based on following our North Star, Jesus, who calls us to love our neighbour. When we struggle to forgive a colleague, we adjust our compass away from holding a grudge and reorient towards Jesus our North Star who asks us to forgive as we have been forgiven.

Help me to follow where you lead, Jesus. Amen. — LG
