Sunday October 13th, 2019 18th Sunday after Pentecost John 6:25-35
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." (verse 35)
Bread has been with the human race since the beginning of time. There are breads made with yeast and others with no yeast. Some breads are plain, some are made with herbs, others are deliciously sweet. Bread frequently accompanies a meal. On some occasions, bread is the actual meal. Bread also plays an important part in special holidays. However it is made or used, bread has been a staple of human diet for millennia. Perhaps that is why Jesus used the common element of bread to talk with his disciples about his divinity. They understood how such a simple element as bread was necessary for existence. It was so in Jesus’ time and it is so now.
But when Jesus declared that he was the Bread of Life, he was telling his disciples that a life in him was sustaining for their very existence. Not for filling up hungry stomachs, but the filling of their hunger for God’s care and love. Jesus is the Bread that spiritually satisfies. It was so in Jesus’ time and it is so now.
Loving Christ, you are the Bread of Life. Send the Holy Spirit among us so we may fill our lives with your grace and love. Amen. — JW
