Friday August 30th, 2019 Psalm 81
Open your mouth wide and I will fill it. (verse 10)
I have been privileged to have witnessed some amazing acts of generosity over the years. These gifts of generosity, for the most part, were given with no expectation of receiving anything in return; perhaps not even a thank you. I have been moved deeply by the actions I have seen and humbled to my core when I see the faith of others active in the gifts of outreach. It might be something as basic as giving a hungry person something to eat, or giving a cold person a pair of gloves, a hat or a scarf. It might be the offer of a shoulder for a hug or a listening ear. Why do people do these things, and how can I learn to let generosity be my default response?
God is our example. The scriptures are filled with examples of God giving generously to God’s people despite their ingratitude, their screw-ups, even their lack of faith. They have short memories when it comes to remembering God has never let them down and that God has been generous at every turn. So often, we get caught up in our circumstances and forget that God will meet our needs, but we also forget that others need our generosity as well.
God, help us to remember your goodness to us. May we always share generously with others. Amen. — LAC
