I cannot imagine how a child feels growing up in an orphanage. The longing to belong to a family must be a burning desire.
My husband’s family took in a young man to help them with farm work. He grew up in an orphanage and, because of an undiagnosed hearing loss, was assigned the task of standing guard at the gate of the orphanage’s cemetery. This “adoptive” family came to love him and started seeing to more than just his room and board. They bought him hearing aids and included him in every family get-together. I know he felt he belonged for the rest of his life.
Because of God’s Son, we, too. have been adopted. We are heirs just as fully as the Israelites. What a wondrous joy we should feel. Our desire to belong has been fulfilled because we are part of the family of God. We are chosen! Let’s celebrate!!
Thank you, gracious God, for adopting us into your family. Amen. — NK
