Saturday August 3rd, 2019 Colossians 3:1-11
In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all! (verse 11)
This verse follows a description of the life we Christians are called to leave behind.
How hard is it to leave old habits or behaviours behind? For me that depends on the habit and how attached to that habit I am. It seems for most of my life, I have had to be careful what I eat or the pounds keep adding on. For me, it is not sweet things, although I do like my sweets, but rather burgers, fries and meat products that I can easily consume in excess. So I continue to have better or worse days, weeks, months and years.
In Paul’s letter to the Colossians, Paul identifies behaviour that is to be left behind. The list is not exhaustive; we can add modern day additions. Disrespecting others is often at the top of the list I hear reported by the media.
Later in this chapter Paul describes for us ways to live that exemplify our Christian faith. Compassion, kindness and humility are but a few. In today’s world, perhaps humility is most difficult to attain.
Gracious God, you have called us to live like Christ in the world today. Help us make it so. Amen. — MB
