Friday July 26th, 2019 Psalm 85
Let me hear what God the LORD will speak? (verse 8)
If you are an Anne of Green Gables fan you can likely picture in your mind Anne’s first attempt at prayer. She does her best, is respectful and when she asks Marilla how she did, the assessment is anything but favourable. In fact, Marilla compares it to an order to the Eaton’s Company!
Prayer is a funny thing, it is meant to be a conversation with God, but it is easy to fall into a one-sided conversation where we do all the talking and don’t allow God to get a word in edgewise. Being silent and listening are very difficult skills to master. Take a minute right now, a full 60 seconds, and just try to meditate in silence?
How did you do? Did it seem like an eternity was passing as your timer ticked along? Was your head crammed full of thoughts, things you need to and should do before Monday? If so, you are not alone. It is hard to step away from our busy lives and really take time to be with God. But if you do, even one minute at a time, you will stand a better chance of hearing what God would like to say to you.
Dear Lord, help us to step away from our frantic world to seek quiet with you today. Amen. — CS
