Sunday July 21st, 2019 6th Sunday after Pentecost Luke 10:38-42
"Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things." (verse 41)
I am Martha. In fact, I am worse than Martha. If Jesus came to my door, I would probably send him away because my kitchen floor wasn’t clean enough for him to see. Then I would spend the next week justifying why I didn’t invite the Lord into my home. Yes, I believe I would do something as profoundly crazy as that.
I am not a fan of the “pop in” visit. I am trying to lighten up, but it stresses me out when someone drops in unannounced. I immediately think my house isn’t clean enough for guests. I remember one time sneaking into the toy room and sitting on the floor rather than answering the door, waiting for the person to leave because my house was a mess!
Mary was right. She forgot about the work and sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to him. She knew it was a tremendous gift to have Jesus in her home. Mary was focused on learning about God and gave Jesus her attention. We can all learn from Mary that in our busy lives we must welcome everyone into our lives and concentrate on the cleanliness of our hearts, not our floors.
Thank you, Jesus, for giving us the gift of your message and teaching us to love one another. Amen. — JR
