Authority, power, dominion

Genesis 1:28 tells of humankind being given dominion over “every living thing that moves on the face of the earth.” Jesus, in Luke 9:1, sends his disciples forth with “power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases.”

We, as disciples of Jesus in the here and now, need to know that in all power, authority and dominion given to us, we must act as servants of God and co-workers with our creator.

In Luke 9 Jesus sends his disciples forth with his game plan, with a work description. (verses 3-4) They were to go forth in faith, travel light, and to also know their limitations.

Jesus’ power and authority would be with them, even though at times they would feel powerless and fall short in their kingdom work. (verse 5) Then they would have to be reassured of whose work they were doing and whose power and authority would always be with them.

God has gifted and empowered us all. We have untapped resources with power and authority available in the reservoir of God’s love and grace.

Guiding God, give us wisdom in all we do to use the power and authority you have given us in acts of compassion and love for others. Amen. — EAM
