Take a number

I used to work in a call centre. Part of my job was handling various customer complaints and requests. At some point, I would have to ask each person, “Can I please have your account number?” I can recall many people who were upset that, to this big company, they were just a number. I’ve heard this at the walk-in clinic as people are asked to take a number and have a seat. I’ve heard this when someone awaits treatment for some kind of disease where a certain percentage of cases are cured. We can easily feel devalued when we are just another number.

You are not another number to our God. As the psalmist declares, God is mindful of you and God cares for you. From Psalm 139, God has searched you and knows you. You cannot flee from God’s presence, for God formed you in your inward parts and knit you together in your mother’s womb. You matter to God, for you are fearfully and wonderfully made.

When I feel like I don't matter or am just another number, remind me that you have crowned me with glory and honour. O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth. Amen. — ANS
