There used to be a commercial for a hair care product that went something like this: You’ll tell two friends, and they’ll tell two friends, and so on, and so on, and so on. There was a multiplication of people on the TV screen, illustrating how the word would spread if you were to try this product.
There is also a multiplication of people that happens after the ascension of Jesus. However, in this case, the key to the multiplication is the Holy Spirit, and the message that is being passed on is about forgiveness and eternal life.
When Jesus lived on this earth, he could only be in one place at a time. However, after the coming of the Holy Spirit, the presence of Jesus was multiplied through his followers. This only became possible after Jesus’ ascension into heaven.
In fact, even today, God continues to give the Holy Spirit to those who put their trust in Jesus, and continues to say to us, “You will be my witnesses.” Jesus continues to live in us and among us through the Holy Spirit, and this same Spirit gives us the words to say and opens the hearts of other people.
Ever-present God, teach us to trust you in all things and to listen to your Spirit at all times, through our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. — LLH
