Can You Imagine?

I always feel a thrill inside when one of the congregation’s favourite hymns is being sung and everyone is joining in, singing with gusto. That same powerful feeling is magnified when I attend wider church functions where more clergy and lay people are gathered, singing their hearts out in praise to our God.

This part of the book of Revelation talks about “myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands” (verse 11) singing praise with full voice before the throne of the Lamb. Can you imagine how thrilling it must be? One can almost feel the tremor of the music moving through our physical bodies. This passage is but a glimmer of what it will be like to be in the presence of God, singing God’s praises. Even bogged down by the inadequacies of human language, John’s Revelation still moves us!

While it is true that parts of the book of Revelation are serious doom and gloom, it is also true that God’s love shows through for those of “every tribe and language and people and nation” (Revelation 5:9), wiping “every tear from their eyes.” (Revelation 21:4)

Sing out! Sing for joy! Sing praise to our God!

Thank you, God, that whatever our worry or quandary, your love abounds and conquers all. Amen. — ML
