We are called to be Jesus

Unlike the three biographical, synoptic gospels, John’s beautifully poetic gospel is all about showing us that in Jesus we see God. The heart of God, longing to touch humanity, is found in the incarnate Jesus Christ.

Hanging on to their doubt, the disciples ask Jesus for more convincing. Jesus tells them that God and Jesus abide in each other, and what’s more, not only does God do God’s work through Jesus, but through all who believe in Jesus. This is not just said to the disciples, but to us as well.

When we put our faith to work, abiding in the love of God, we become the hands and face of Jesus to our broken, hurting world. Can you imagine a world where, instead of incessant yelling, people and nations listen to each other? A world where those who are sick have access to care? A world where children go to school with a nourishing meal to start the day?

You and I, along with believers the world over, are called to prayerfully discern what we are being called to do, and then to get busy doing it!

Thank you, God, that Jesus abides in us, longing to work through us for your kingdom. Amen. — ML
