After Jesus’ death, the disciples were scared. Understandably so. They locked the doors of their meeting place to keep out those who might also put them on trial. Perhaps they even whispered among themselves if they heard sounds outside.
Disturbing things had happened. Jesus was crucified after a hurried court case to convict him. Might the chief priests be after them, too? Then the news of Jesus rising from the dead. There was no telling what might happen next. And yet.
How was it that Jesus appeared before them? After a gruesome death like his, how could he suddenly materialize? Little did they realize the full power God showed in God’s Son. Little did they know what he would ask of them next-to believe and go out and tell others. They’d be standing before unbelieving crowds, entering strange doors in strange towns, hoping they’d be welcomed. Or even healing sick people and casting out demons.
Think of a time when you were scared of what was being asked. We’re not all asked for the same action. What can you do where you are?
Almighty God, we have little concept of all that you are and can be. We ask your guidance when we share your word. Amen. — CRW
