Stay focused

Beep-beep-beep goes the alarm clock at 5:30 a.m. My wife packs her meals, grabs her gym bag, wishes me a good day and is out the door. There are daily trips to the gym and of course, not much baking sitting around. This signals a fitness competition is approaching, which is both exciting and rewarding as I watch her goal become more real each day.

The apostle Paul was driven in his religious convictions, and he urges the church in Philippi to focus on “the prize of the heavenly call.” A clearly defined goal can help us decide: do I watch an entire season of a TV series, or call a lonely friend, or get out for a walk? At work, my wife walks away from huge trays of treats and desserts, regarding them as rubbish for they distract from the prize.

Our goal is to gain Christ, to be found in him, to know him. Regular personal study, worship and prayer sharpen appreciation for his resurrection and boundless grace, which provide many opportunities to talk about our faith.

Let us plan on reading a portion of God’s Word every day. It will help us grow and stay focused on what is really important.

Lord, help me stay focused on you daily. Amen. — MDB
