Monday Blues

Monday. The least favourite day. The weekend is over and the rest of the week feels uphill. Did you enjoy your weekend? Did you complete your “honey do” list? Visit your mother-in-law? Coach hockey? Get the laundry done? Play with the kids?

Google “Monday memes” and you’ll find pages of hilarious plays on words, images and phrases that remind you why Monday is such a drag. There are upbeat positive Monday memes too, but the ratio is about 4:1. Why is Monday so terrible? Was your weekend wasted? Do you wish you had spent it differently? Do you dislike your job that much?

Whether you think the week begins on Sunday or Monday, what if you treated Monday like the old bumper sticker: Today is the first day of the rest of your life! (Or rather: the rest of your week!) Start fresh. Give the rest of the week a new tone. It is a great day to be alive! Point your heart toward God and remember: God is gracious, compassionate, slow to anger, abounds in love and relents from sending calamity. (verse 13)

When someone asks, “Where is their God?” (verse 17) you know the answer: God is with you in your Monday. And Tuesday. And Wednesday?

When the winter seems long and the darkness seems longer, remind us of your abounding love. Amen. — SNN
