Have you ever wondered why Jesus used different methods to heal people while he was on this earth? Have you ever wondered why sometimes, as in this passage, all who came into contact with him were healed, while in other stories of Jesus’ life, only some were healed?
I’ve often wondered, sometimes with cynicism or mistrust, at God’s unique ways of dealing with God’s children. In your life and mine, God answers prayers in different ways. Some people get the jobs they pray for, while others struggle with unemployment. Some have much financial success, while others forge through poverty-stricken days. Sometimes, I find it easier to be the one suffering through something than to watch loved ones suffer. Sometimes, I feel confused by God’s ways, and I have no definitive answers, but I believe this reading gives us some valuable insight.
It says that they were all trying to touch God. The healing wasn’t their doing; reaching out to Jesus was.
Perhaps it’s the same with us; we simply need to reach out, then let God’s sovereign love determine what is best for us. As we touch Jesus, we will be changed somehow, because there is power in touching him.
Today, let me touch Jesus. Amen. — KGT
