The Rock of Refuge

You’ve likely prayed a prayer like this before. You’re stuck. You cannot get out of it yourself. You don’t know what to do. You need help. “God, help me!”

I’ve heard this prayer prayed in desperation when a parent didn’t know how to help their child. I’ve heard this prayer prayed fervently after one received a diagnosis. I’ve heard this prayer prayed in fear when one continued to struggle with mental illness. I’ve heard this prayer prayed in heartbreak when one felt betrayed by a friend. Sometimes, we find ourselves in those places in which God alone can save.

Amidst our personal frailties, our God remains strong. Amidst our fractured relationships, our God holds us secure. The sands of our lives can shift and the waters can ebb and flow, yet God alone is our rock of refuge that cannot be shaken. In Christ, we have the hope and promise of peace that surpasses all understanding. In Christ, we have the promise that nothing can separate us from God’s love. In Christ, we are given new life.

Thank you, O God, that you hear me when I pray. Thank you for being my refuge. When all crumbles around me, keep me faithful to you. Amen. — ANS
