Some believe God is distant, living off in the clouds somewhere. Some believe God is always angry at humanity, ready to strike in wrath and vengeance. Some just don’t know what to believe.
The Christian faith talks about atonement. One way to understand atonement is: at-one-ment. By the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, you are “at one” with God. Just as the high priest would make sacrifice for sins for the people of Israel on the Day of Atonement, so we might understand Jesus Christ to be our high priest, who, once and for all, has atoned for us-brought us peace with God.
So, in those moments when you aren’t sure what to believe, or God feels distant, or you find yourself fearful, remember Jesus and remember atonement. Indeed, Jesus the Christ took on suffering for us and is most present in our own times of suffering.
Thank you, O God, that you know me inside and out. Thank you that, in those times that I suffer, I am never alone, for you are with me. Give me faith and courage in those times of trial and testing. Help me to trust that I am, once and for all, at one with you, in and through Jesus Christ my Saviour. Amen. — ANS
