?and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. (verses 3-4)
When we were small, most of us took for granted that our parents would feed us and we would happily eat. We probably didn’t give a whole lot of thought to what it took to put the food on the table, nor did we give any thought to what was expected of us to be good, functioning members of the family, and then of society and the world.
Faith can be like that. It’s so easy to partake: to show up at church every Sunday; to eat the spiritual food that’s provided for us; to even get involved in the various activities that the church offers. But this passage makes it clear that we can do all of that and still not please God. Verse 5 clearly states that God wasn’t pleased with most of the Israelites, because they went through the motions but remained selfish and spiritually immature.
God loves us. God wants us to do more than eat. God wants us to digest and grow into fully mature spiritual people, and to that end has provided the way, through God’s Son Jesus Christ.
Dear Lord, thank you for everything you provide for us. Help us to partake of it to become the people you want us to be. Amen. — DLG
