But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. (verse 19)
Many of us will attend a Christmas Eve service today. For some, this is a special moment looked forward to. Others come out of habit or family obligation. My own motives are as mixed as anyone else’s.
Mary’s pondering stirred my own pondering. What has become most important to me about this special time? I enjoy the carefully rehearsed music, singing the carols and being with family and friends. Singing “Silent Night” by candlelight stirs fond memories.
Hearing the story of the birth of Jesus is what’s become the best moment for me. I can almost recite the story word by word.
I welcome being reminded that in those days and in this day, God still comes to be among us no matter what priorities the powerful among us may decree. Good news of great joy for all the people is proclaimed once again for all to hear and heed and to ponder.
Like Mary, I too ponder. What things of God need to be born in me? What fears need to be overcome? Who needs to have God’s good news come alive among them as they go about their usual routine? How might I glorify and praise God for all that has been told to me?
Gracious God, thank you for the birth of Jesus. Help me to ponder again the treasure of this story. Amen. — KW
