Once and For All

Jesus was so significant to Western culture that for years, our calendar and dates were defined by his birth. The notations BC (Before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini or the year of our Lord) became the system we used to define time. Although the way we label our years has changed, Jesus’ birth is still indeed a significant event. This passage helps us to see how our relationship with God was changed because of Jesus’ birth, crucifixion and resurrection.

We no longer live in the time of the law-a time of ongoing sacrifices where we live with “a reminder of sin year after year.” (verse 3) Rather, as our key verse says, “we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” (verse 10) Through Christ’s obedience on the cross and through our faith in Jesus, we are made right with God. There is nothing we can do to make God love us more; there is nothing we can do to make God love us less. Thank God for this truth.

Lord, where would we be without your love? Thank you for your sacrifice and the new life we have in you. Amen. — JL
