The Upside Down Kingdom

One of my first memories of primary school is from a fun kindergarten learning exercise. We learned about opposites for the first time. We cut out and coloured pictures and paired them up with their opposite items-a picture of a fire next to a picture of a block of ice, a picture of a huge hippo next to a picture of a tiny mouse. I think of this memory every time I think about what God’s kingdom is like.

Like no other place, it’s a kingdom of opposites and the unexpected. Imagine with me what our lives would look like if we lived in the fullness of the kingdom. We might look amongst humble beginnings for great leaders. Our weaknesses would bring us joy for they make us strong. The poor would rejoice for they would know they are truly blessed.

The best part is that our gracious king is calling us to live with him in this kingdom, right here and now.

O God, you do not think as we do. The least of us is great to you. Help us to have your kingdom perspective here and now. Amen. — JL
