Thursday November 15th, 2018 1 Samuel 1:4-20
She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD, and wept bitterly. (verse 10)
Hannah’s prayers for God’s intervention must have appeared mad. Hannah weeps with desperation, mumbles wordlessly in the temple, and finds herself in full public view at her personal rock bottom. Yet, despite all the pain she is experiencing, Hannah believes there is hope and is fervent in prayer. She anticipates and expects God’s intervention.
To hope in the midst of sorrow is a difficult thing. I can’t begin to imagine the kind of sadness Hannah was feeling, but I think each of us experiences some kind of rock bottom moment at some point in our lives, so her story should make us take note.
To measure our suffering against that of Hannah would be a fruitless exercise, but to hope as Hannah did is to follow a holy example. God’s faithfulness in the pit of our sorrow is no different than in our joy. When we find our rock bottom, may we find God there as well.
God of faithfulness and love, grant us peace in our suffering and hope to carry us through. Amen. — AB
