God’s Faithful Blessings

As I write this devotion, it is -28C and 12 cm of snow has fallen, blown and been shovelled, hardly a time to think of planting or harvesting, for the land lies solidly frozen and dormant.

Yet, it is a time for farmers to think about the season ahead. A local farming television show has presenters giving advice on what to plant, how to plant, when to fertilize and how to market the crop.

This beautiful text helps us focus on the one true God who provides so graciously for all. The soil and animals are told not to fear. The children of Zion are asked to rejoice in God who has provided a time of rain and then abundant threshing. Even the past times of loss for their crops will be repaid because the one true God has spoken. God is faithful to the children of Israel.

It is two thousand years later. Now we, God’s children in this year of our Lord, 2018, can still rejoice in God’s promises. God still provides our times of planting and harvest. God is in our midst as our Lord and our God. We know, believe and trust there is no other.

Giving God, may we thankfully sow and reap your blessings in every season. Amen. — ES
