Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. (verse 13)
Imagery of armour, swords and helmets can be a little difficult to relate to in our modern age. However, many of us use some sort of personal protective equipment in our daily jobs or hobbies.
Working outdoors with teens, it’s sometimes hard to convince them they need to put on a toque and mitts in the winter, or sunscreen and a hat in the summer. I was equally difficult to convince when I was a teen. However, an incident when a work glove saved several of my fingers changed my thinking!
Instead of badgering or nagging, my approach has changed. I now remind students that every task has dangers, and we use certain gear to keep safe. It’s not about “babying” them; it’s about staying safe and getting a job done.
Today’s passage calls us to pray and witness, even in difficult situations. We may feel under attack; life may get us down. The armour of God-truth, faith and righteousness-helps us stay on task.
God, how we struggle with the world may have changed, but you have not. Equip me with the spiritual gifts I need to remain faithful and strong in your love, praying always. Amen. — BM
