Hungry Souls

I work with a lot of school children in an outdoor setting. The programs I lead run in all kinds of weather, and we’re always quite active. After about an hour outside, it becomes very clear if a child (or teacher or supervising parent) has had a good breakfast. Those who haven’t lose concentration, speed and strength; they have difficulty carrying on. A bite of bannock, or even a toasted marshmallow, works wonders. About 10 minutes after eating, one can actually see those who were hungry come more alive again. The very promise of a campfire snack can cause a surge of group energy, carrying each other towards their sweet treat.

How much sweeter and more satisfying is it when we recognize that Jesus feeds our souls? The true bread from heaven lifts our spirits and sustains us, not just until the next meal, but forever. Knowing this hunger is satisfied truly makes us come more alive.

Jesus, remind me of my hunger for you and your grace. Sustain my body and soul, and strengthen me to be an instrument of your love in the world. Amen. — BM
